AC mold causing illness: clean ourselves or call professionals?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now I’ve found patches of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind the bedroom curtain. My husband and I have both had a persistent dry cough and headaches that just won’t go away. How dangerous is this, and is it safe for us to clean it ourselves or do we absolutely need to call a professional company?

Your symptoms and the visible mold growth are strong indicators that professional remediation is needed. In Dubai's climate, AC leaks create constant dampness, allowing mold to thrive and release spores into your air. The persistent cough and headaches you describe are common reactions to prolonged mold exposure.

Cleaning visible patches yourself is not recommended. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your apartment. Over-the-counter sprays often fail to address the root moisture problem or the mold growing inside the AC unit and wall cavity.

The Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for addressing fungal growth in buildings, emphasizing containment and proper disposal. A certified professional will first identify the source of the AC leak, contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, use HEPA filtration to clean the air, and safely remove contaminated materials. Crucially, they should provide verification through before-and-after testing to confirm the environment is safe.

For your health and to ensure the problem is resolved correctly, a professional assessment is the necessary first step. They can determine the full extent of the growth behind the wall and within the AC system, which is almost certainly present given the duration of the leak.
