AC mold causing illness: DIY removal or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little and now there's a patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind the headboard. For the past week, both my husband and I have been waking up with stuffy noses and headaches that just won't quit. I’m really worried it’s making us sick. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of it ourselves, or should I just call a professional company in Dubai right away?

Stop using the AC and move the headboard to ventilate the area immediately. Your symptoms are strong indicators of mold-related illness, and the leak provides the constant moisture mold needs to thrive.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, a careful DIY approach is possible. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part household bleach to ten parts water. Let it dry completely. However, DIY only addresses the visible growth; it cannot assess what may be inside the AC unit or the wall cavity, which is highly likely given the leak.

Given your symptoms and the AC's involvement, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Dubai's high humidity means mold can regrow quickly if the moisture source isn't perfectly eliminated. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside the wall and the AC drip pan, drain line, and coils. They can also perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species, which is critical for understanding health risks and verifying the cleanup was successful. The most effective remediation fixes the water leak, contains the area to prevent spore spread, removes contaminated materials, and uses HEPA filtration to clean the air.
