AC mold causing sinus issues and how to clean?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this weird damp smell for the last couple of months, and I’ve started waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat every single morning. I just pulled the filter out and the back of it is covered in black and greenish fuzzy spots. Could this be causing my constant sinus issues and what’s the best way to get the entire AC unit professionally cleaned here?

Yes, the mold in your AC is very likely causing your sinus issues. The damp smell and visible growth on the filter are clear indicators of microbial contamination. In Dubai's humid climate, AC units are prime locations for mold due to constant condensation. The spores are then circulated throughout your apartment, and the symptoms you describe—morning stuffy nose and sore throat—are classic reactions to prolonged exposure.

For a situation with visible growth and health symptoms, a standard AC cleaning may not be sufficient. The growth inside the evaporator coil and drip pan is often more extensive than what's on the filter. You need a professional mold inspection and remediation service. They should use antimicrobial treatments specifically designed for HVAC systems, not just a water rinse. The goal is to kill the existing colonies and apply a protective coating to inhibit regrowth.

After any remediation, request verification. A reputable company will provide before-and-after documentation, such as photos or surface swab results from their microbiology lab, to confirm the unit's interior is truly clean. For ongoing prevention, ensure your AC drain line is clear and consider having the system professionally serviced every 6-12 months, especially in high-humidity areas like JVC.
