AC mold causing sore throat: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last few weeks and now I’ve spotted a patch of black mold on the wall behind the curtain. My throat has been feeling scratchy in the mornings and I'm starting to get worried. Is this the kind of thing I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

A persistent AC leak and visible black mold, especially with a scratchy throat, suggests a problem beyond surface cleaning. In Dubai's climate, AC condensation and high humidity create perfect conditions for mold growth inside walls where you can't see it. Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it doesn't kill the roots (hyphae) or address the moisture source.

For a leak that's lasted weeks, the wall cavity behind the plasterboard is likely wet and contaminated. DIY cleaning could disturb spores and spread them further. The scratchy throat is a common reaction to mold spores in the air, indicating exposure is already happening.

You need two actions: fix the AC leak permanently to stop the moisture, and then address the mold. A professional inspection with a borescope can assess the damage inside the wall. For widespread or hidden mold, remediation involves containment, safe removal of affected materials, and HEPA vacuuming to capture spores. Post-remediation verification through air or surface sampling, like the testing we conduct in our lab, is the only way to confirm the environment is safe again. For a situation with persistent moisture and health symptoms, calling a professional is strongly advised.
