AC mold cleaning cost for JVC apartment and DIY risk?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this weird damp smell for a couple of months, and I finally pulled the filter out to find black spots all over the inside of the unit. We’ve been getting more headaches than usual and I’m worried it’s the mold. For a standard one-bedroom AC system, what’s the realistic cost range to get this professionally cleaned and treated, and is it a complete DIY fail to try and tackle it myself with the humidity here?

Black spots and a damp smell in a JVC apartment AC unit strongly indicate a mold issue, which is common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation. The headaches you're experiencing are a typical reaction to mold exposure.
For a standard one-bedroom system, professional cleaning cost is typically determined by the number of AC units (fan coils), not the apartment size. Expect a significant difference between cleaning a single unit versus a multi-unit system. The final cost is also driven by the extent of the contamination and the required treatment methods. Attempting a DIY clean is a high-risk approach in Dubai's climate. Over-the-counter sprays often only bleach the visible surface mold, leaving the root system intact deep within the unit. This can cause a rapid and often worse regrowth. More critically, improper cleaning can dislodge a large volume of spores into your living space, drastically increasing your exposure. A professional remediation for a contaminated system involves containment to prevent cross-contamination, specialized antimicrobial agents to address the root system, and most importantly, verification that the problem is solved. Reputable companies should provide before-and-after testing to confirm the air quality is safe. For a confirmed mold case like this, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to understand the full scope before any work begins. |
