AC mold emergency or can it wait for technician?« Back to Previous Page
|
My AC unit in my bedroom has been making a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks. I just pulled the vent cover off and found what looks like black and green fuzzy mold all around the inside of the duct and on the unit’s grill. Given how much we run the AC here, should I be treating this as a complete emergency, or is it something I can schedule a technician to look at later this week?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants immediate attention and should be treated with a high degree of urgency. The presence of visible black and green fuzzy growth inside the AC duct and on the grill indicates an established microbial colony. In Dubai's climate, where air conditioning runs almost continuously, these units act as the lungs of your home. A contaminated system will consistently circulate mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) throughout the enclosed space, which is the source of the damp smell you've noticed.
Continuous exposure to these airborne contaminants can lead to a range of health issues, from allergic reactions, sinus congestion, and respiratory irritation to more severe complications for immunocompromised individuals. The high humidity and constant condensation within AC units create an ideal breeding ground for mold, meaning the problem will not resolve itself and will only proliferate without professional intervention. While it may not constitute a 24-hour emergency requiring evacuation, you should not delay scheduling a professional inspection and remediation. Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as improper methods can aerosolize the spores and spread the contamination further throughout your property.
