AC mold from closet leak: DIY clean or call pros?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom closet has been leaking a bit for the last couple of months, and now I’m seeing small black spots on the back wall and our shoes. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, and my husband has been sneezing a lot more lately. Is this something we can clean with vinegar ourselves, or do we need to call a professional mold remediation company in Dubai?

Given the leak and visible growth, this requires professional assessment. Small black spots often indicate active mold, and the increased sneezing suggests it's already affecting indoor air quality. In Dubai's climate, AC systems can quickly spread mold spores from a localized leak throughout the living space.

For a leak that's persisted months, surface cleaning with vinegar is insufficient. It may temporarily remove the visible stain but won't address the moisture source or the hyphae (root structures) growing within the wall. The backing of drywall is particularly porous.

The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines for mold remediation in residential properties, emphasizing containment and proper disposal to prevent cross-contamination. A certified professional will first identify and repair the AC leak—the critical first step. They will then assess the extent of the damage behind the wall, which is likely greater than what's visible.

Remediation involves isolating the area, safely removing contaminated materials like affected drywall, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. Finally, post-remediation verification, often through air or surface sampling, is necessary to confirm the spore count has returned to a safe level. This comprehensive process is the only way to ensure the problem is resolved and your husband's symptoms subside. For a situation involving persistent moisture and health effects, a professional inspection is strongly advised.
