AC mold from leak safe for toddler or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I'm seeing a bunch of small black spots spreading out from the wet area. My husband thinks we can just spray it with bleach, but I'm worried because my toddler plays on that floor all the time. Is this something we can safely handle ourselves or do we need to call a professional mold remediation company?

A leak onto carpet for weeks with visible black spots spreading is a situation that requires professional assessment, especially with a toddler in the home. Bleach is a surface disinfectant that cannot penetrate porous materials like carpet backing and underlay, where the majority of the mould colony and its microscopic spores actually reside. Spraying it may briefly lighten the visible colour but will not address the root infestation.

The constant high humidity in Dubai creates an ideal environment for mould to proliferate rapidly from a persistent water source. The primary health risk for your toddler is inhalation of airborne spores, which can cause or exacerbate respiratory irritation, coughing, and allergies. Direct skin contact is also a concern.

For a small, recent leak on a hard surface, a DIY approach might be sufficient. However, given the duration, the material involved (carpet), and the presence of a child, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use moisture meters to determine the full extent of water damage and take air or swab samples for lab analysis to identify the mould species, which dictates the appropriate remediation protocol.

Proper remediation for this scenario typically involves isolating the area, removing the affected carpet and underlay, HEPA vacuuming, and treating the subfloor. The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on mould remediation to ensure it is handled safely and effectively. Given these factors, the most prudent course is to have a certified professional assess the situation to ensure your home environment is safe.
