AC Mold from Leaking Unit: DIY or Professional Help?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the wall for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a patch of black and green mold spreading behind the headboard. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but the smell is still really strong and I’m worried it’s inside the wall. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

That black and green mold spreading from an AC leak is a clear sign of a moisture problem that needs immediate attention. In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and constant AC use, this situation allows mold to thrive both on the surface and, more critically, inside the wall cavity where you can't see it.
Vinegar or bleach only addresses surface mold you can see and will not eliminate the colony growing within the damp drywall or insulation. The persistent strong smell is a strong indicator of this deeper, hidden growth. Disturbing it yourself can release a large number of spores into your bedroom air. For a leak that has persisted for weeks, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall's internal damage. The AC unit itself and its drip pan also need inspection, as the mold source is likely inside the system. Remediation often requires controlled removal of affected building materials to properly eradicate the problem. In the interim, move the headboard to improve air circulation and dry the area as much as possible. Keep the bedroom well-ventilated. For a problem of this potential scale, a professional assessment is the safest course to ensure it is resolved completely and to prevent recurrence. |
