Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can worsen indoor air quality without killing the root structure. After wiping, ensure the area is dried completely with a fan.

However, if the staining is extensive, has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the ceiling tile, or has a musty odour, this indicates a deeper infestation that cleaning surfaces won't fix. In these cases, the affected material often needs to be safely removed and replaced by professionals to prevent spores from spreading.

Prevention is key. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly to maintain proper drainage and airflow. Using a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid months, can help reduce the moisture that mould needs to grow. Improving general ventilation also helps.

For a persistent issue, a professional inspection can identify the exact mould species and the full extent of the growth, which is often hidden within the AC unit or ceiling void. This is the only way to ensure it is addressed completely.
