AC mold in bedroom: DIY or professional for my toddler?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit and now we've got a patch of black mold in the corner of the bedroom ceiling. It's been slowly growing for a couple of weeks since the last time we had that really humid weather. I'm worried about my toddler breathing it in but also don't want to get ripped off. For a small patch like this, are we talking a few hundred dirhams for a professional, or should I just try to handle it myself with bleach?

Given the presence of a toddler and the fact the mold growth is linked to an AC leak, professional assessment is strongly recommended. In Dubai's climate, a ceiling patch from a leak is rarely an isolated issue; the moisture has likely traveled, and what you see is often just the visible portion.
While a small patch might seem like a DIY job with bleach, this is a common misconception. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on non-porous materials but does not address the root moisture problem or kill the mold hyphae growing within porous drywall or ceiling plaster. It can also aggravate the situation by adding moisture. A proper remediation involves identifying and repairing the AC leak source, assessing the full extent of moisture damage, safely containing the area to prevent spore spread, removing and replacing compromised building materials, and HEPA vacuuming. For a toddler, ensuring the airborne spore count is reduced during and after the process is critical. The cost for a professional job is not typically a flat rate but is based on the scope of contamination. A small, contained patch is on the lower end of the spectrum, but you are paying for the diagnostic skill to find the moisture source and the protocol to ensure it's resolved correctly. Reputable providers will offer a post-remediation verification test to give you documented proof the area is safe, which is invaluable for peace of mind with a child. Request an on-site inspection for an accurate assessment. |
