AC mold in bedroom: DIY or professional for pregnant wife?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the wall for a couple of months, and now we’ve discovered a large patch of black mold behind the wardrobe. We’re in a villa in Mirdif and my wife is pregnant, so I’m really worried about the health risks. Is this something I can tackle myself with cleaning products from ACE, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company, and what kind of cost am I looking at for a single room?

Given your wife's pregnancy, do not attempt DIY cleaning. Pregnant individuals are more vulnerable to the effects of mold exposure, which can include respiratory irritation and allergic reactions. The primary concern is that improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, significantly increasing inhalation risk and spreading contamination throughout the room.

For a leak that has persisted for months and created a large patch behind furniture, professional remediation is strongly advised. The wall cavity likely has extensive hidden growth that surface cleaning cannot address. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can penetrate deep into building materials like drywall and insulation.

A reputable remediation company will first contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, then safely remove and dispose of affected porous materials. They will use HEPA-filtered equipment to clean the air and surfaces, and a final verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the space is safe. The process for a single room is a significant project, but it is the most reliable method to resolve the issue for good. Start by fixing the AC leak immediately to prevent the problem from recurring.
