AC mold in closet: DIY bleach or professional cleaning?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a bit of water into the closet next to it, and now I've found a patch of black and green mold spreading on the back wall inside. It’s been getting worse over the last couple of weeks since the humidity really kicked in. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I absolutely need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it?

The black and green mold growth in your closet is a classic symptom of an AC condensate drain line leak or a clogged drain pan, a very common issue in Dubai due to our extreme humidity and year-round AC operation. While a small patch might seem manageable, I strongly advise against using a standard bleach solution. Bleach is primarily water, which can feed the mold root structure hidden within the porous wall material, and its fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces. More critically, it only bleaches the surface visible growth without addressing the root colony.

The presence of persistent moisture means the mold is actively growing. In the UAE, improper remediation can violate health and safety standards for indoor air quality. This situation requires a professional approach. We would first conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and possibly air quality testing, to identify the full extent of the infestation behind the wall and the exact source of the water intrusion.

Remediation involves containing the area, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment to eliminate the colony, and addressing the moisture source by servicing the AC unit. Given the climate, simply cleaning the visible spot is a temporary fix; the mold will return without solving the underlying moisture problem.

For a definitive solution and to ensure your indoor environment is safe, I recommend calling our specialists at Saniservice for an inspection. You can reach us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com. We can diagnose the AC issue and remediate the mold correctly, protecting your property and health.
