AC mold in Dubai apartment: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Downtown Dubai seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpeted floor in the living room, and now I'm seeing a few small black patches of what I think is mold along the edge of the skirting board. I tried wiping it with vinegar but it came back after a few days. Is this something I can handle myself with a stronger cleaner, or should I just call a professional mold removal company and what would that roughly cost for a small area?

The water leak is the primary issue that must be fixed first. In Dubai's climate, constant AC condensation creates a persistent moisture source, allowing mold to regrow quickly after surface cleaning. The black patches you see are likely just the surface manifestation; the moisture has probably seeped into the skirting board, the carpet backing, and possibly the underlying concrete, harboring a larger colony.
For a small, visible area, a thorough DIY approach is possible but requires addressing the root cause. You must stop the AC leak—this often involves unclogging the condensate drain line. Then, to clean, use a solution of detergent and water, not just vinegar. Scrub the hard surfaces, but for the carpet, you need to extract moisture from the pad underneath. A wet-dry vacuum is essential for this. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely within 24-48 hours using dehumidifiers and fans; opening windows often introduces more humid air, counterproductively. However, given that the mold returned after your first attempt, the infiltration is likely deeper than surface level. Professional remediation is advised when mold recurs or if the area is larger than one square meter. Pros use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness you can't see. They also employ containment and HEPA filtration to prevent spores from spreading to other rooms during cleaning, which is a significant risk in an apartment. The cost for a small area is typically a few hundred to a thousand dirhams, but you should request an on-site assessment for an accurate quote. The peace of mind from a proper, science-backed remediation that includes post-clearance testing is often worth the investment. |
