AC mold in Dubai apartment: professional fix or handyman??« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit, and now I’m seeing a small patch of black mold, about the size of a dinner plate, on the wall behind the unit. It’s been slowly growing over the last few weeks since the weather got more humid. I’m worried about my family breathing it in but I have no idea what this costs to fix here. Is this a job for a professional mold remediation company, or can a good handyman handle it, and what’s a fair price I should expect to pay?

That leak and resulting mold growth is a common issue in Dubai apartments, especially with the recent humidity spike. Given the size and that it's on a porous wall surface, this requires professional remediation, not just a handyman.

A handyman can fix the AC condensate drain line leak, which is often the root cause, but they are not equipped for proper mold abatement. Scrubbing visible mold on drywall without addressing the moisture and airborne spores behind it will cause it to return quickly. The goal is to remove the contaminated material safely, prevent spores from spreading to other rooms, and ensure the wall cavity is completely dry.

For a patch that size, expect the remediation to involve sealing off the area, removing the affected section of drywall, HEPA vacuuming, and applying antimicrobial solutions. The final cost is driven by the extent of hidden damage found once the wall is opened. Reputable companies provide a detailed scope of work and post-remediation verification, often with moisture meters and sometimes air testing, to confirm the environment is back to a normal fungal ecology. Always request this documentation.

While there's no fixed price without an assessment, you're not just paying for removal—you're paying for the guarantee that the underlying problem is solved and the air quality in your home is safe. For a standard apartment job, the price is typically in line with other essential home services in Dubai. Get a few assessments; any provider should offer a free onsite evaluation and a clear, itemized quote before starting work.
