AC mold in Dubai: DIY clean or call professionals?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a while, and now I’m seeing a bunch of black and greenish spots spreading out from the wall. It’s only in that one corner but the room smells really damp. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here in Dubai?

Based on the symptoms you've described, this is a serious mold infestation that requires professional remediation, not a DIY solution. The black and greenish spots indicate active growth, and the persistent damp smell confirms high moisture content within the carpet and likely the underlying subfloor and wall structure.

In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, a simple surface clean with bleach or vinegar is completely ineffective. These household solutions only remove surface discoloration and cannot address the root cause: the moisture trapped deep within the porous materials. The AC leak has likely saturated the carpet underlay and possibly the wall's drywall, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold that will continue to return and potentially cause health issues.

Attempting to clean it yourself can be hazardous, as it will aerosolize the mold spores, spreading the contamination throughout your home and into the AC duct system. Furthermore, Dubai Municipality has strict health and safety regulations regarding indoor air quality and mold remediation in residential properties, which are best handled by certified professionals to ensure compliance and safety.

Given the extent of the leak and visible growth, you need a professional inspection and remediation plan. The process involves identifying the exact source of the AC leak, conducting moisture mapping, containing the area to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing and disposing of the affected porous materials (carpet, underlay, potentially drywall), and using industrial-grade HEPA filtration and antimicrobial agents to treat the area.

For a situation like this, I strongly recommend you contact a certified professional. Saniservice specializes in mold inspection and remediation in the UAE.
