AC mold in Dubai: DIY fix or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to have leaked into the wall behind it, and now there's a huge black splotch of mold spreading on the wallpaper. The AC unit is constantly running because of the heat, and I'm worried the moisture is making it worse every day. I’ve tried wiping it with bleach, but it just comes back darker. What's the realistic ballpark cost to get this professionally treated in Dubai, and is it a total DIY fail that I need to call someone immediately?

Based on your description, this is a serious case that requires immediate professional intervention. The black splotch spreading on the wallpaper indicates a significant and active moisture issue originating from the AC leak. The constant operation of the AC unit due to Dubai's climate is acting as a continuous moisture source, fueling the mold growth.

Your attempt with bleach is a common DIY fail. Bleach is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and wallpaper. It only bleaches the surface pigment temporarily and adds moisture, causing the mold to regrow more aggressively, which explains why it came back darker. The root cause—the water intrusion and saturated building materials—has not been addressed.

In the UAE, improper mold remediation can violate public health and housing regulations, as spreading contamination is a concern. A professional inspection is non-negotiable here. The cost for remediation in Dubai can vary widely based on the extent of the damage. For a contained leak like this, you might be looking at a ballpark range of AED 1,500 to AED 4,000. This would include identifying and fixing the AC drain line or condensation pan fault, isolating the affected area, safely removing the contaminated wallpaper and drywall, applying antimicrobial treatments, and restoring the area.

Given the high humidity and constant AC use, this will not fix itself. I strongly recommend you call a certified professional immediately to prevent further structural damage and potential health risks.
