AC mold in Dubai: DIY or call building management?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of weeks and now I've just found a patch of black mold on the back of the wardrobe. It's been so humid lately in Dubai, and I'm worried it's spreading. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call the building management immediately?

Given the humidity and constant AC use in Dubai, a leaking unit is a serious mold risk. That black patch on your wardrobe is a visible sign; spores are likely in the AC system and air.
Call building management first. In most Dubai apartments, the AC unit and the condensate drain line leading to it are the building's responsibility. They should send their maintenance team to fix the leak at its source immediately. A persistent leak means the mold will return even if you clean the visible patch. For the mold on the wardrobe, you can handle a small patch (under one square meter) if you are healthy and not sensitive. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Dry the area completely with a fan—moisture is the enemy. However, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The leak has been ongoing for weeks, and mold inside the AC unit or wall cavity is probable. An indoor environmental professional can conduct air and surface testing to determine the spore count and species, which dictates the remediation scope. In Dubai's climate, a hidden problem can quickly escalate. |
