AC mold in Dubai villa: DIY or professional for toddler?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a while, and now I’ve pulled the furniture back to find a pretty big patch of black mold underneath. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, and I’m worried about my toddler breathing it in. Is this something I can handle myself with cleaners from ACE, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai, and what’s the typical cost for a job like this?

That black mold under a leaking AC unit is a serious health concern, especially with a toddler in the home. In Dubai's climate, AC condensation provides constant moisture, and the high humidity allows mold to thrive unseen. Given the size of the patch and its location in a bedroom, this is not a DIY job.
The primary risk is that disturbing the mold during cleaning will aerosolize spores, spreading them throughout your home's air and into the HVAC system. Over-the-counter cleaners from ACE will only bleach the visible surface and cannot address the root moisture problem or the mold growing deep within the carpet fibres and likely the underlay. For a child with developing lungs, prolonged exposure to these spores can significantly worsen allergies and asthma. You need a professional assessment. Dubai Municipality and DHA guidelines require proper containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment for mold remediation. A reputable company will first identify and fix the AC leak, then isolate the area, remove the contaminated carpet and underlay, treat the subfloor, and verify clearance with air testing. The cost is not trivial, as it involves specialised equipment and disposal, but it is necessary for health. Request a detailed assessment and quote; any trustworthy provider will offer this before starting work. |
