AC mold in Jumeirah: DIY clean or call professional now?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet for maybe a week or two, and now I’m seeing a small black patch of mold starting to spread from the corner. With this humidity, I’m worried it’s going to get out of control fast. Is this something I need to call a professional to handle immediately this weekend, or can I try to clean it myself first?

The AC leak has created a classic high-humidity environment mold needs to thrive, especially in our Dubai climate. That black patch is the visible colony, but the water has likely seeped, meaning there's more mold growing within the carpet backing and possibly the underpad.
For a patch smaller than one square foot, a DIY approach can be attempted if you address the source first. You must stop the AC leak immediately; no cleaning will be effective if the area stays wet. For the mold, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (one cup bleach to one gallon of water). Dry the area completely within 24-48 hours using fans and a dehumidifier. This is critical, as any residual moisture will cause regrowth. However, if the leak has been ongoing for two weeks, the moisture penetration is likely extensive. If the mold covers more than a square foot, has a musty odor, or returns after cleaning, you need a professional assessment. Remediation involves removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials like carpet and underpad correctly to prevent spore dispersal. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide before-and-after testing to verify the area is truly clean and the species present aren't a high-risk type. Given the humidity, this situation can escalate quickly from a small patch to a larger infestation, so prompt, correct action is essential. |
