AC mold in Jumeirah: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a little into the wall behind it, and now I'm seeing a small patch of black mold growing there. It's been getting worse over the last couple of weeks since the humidity really kicked in. I'm worried about it spreading but also don't want to get ripped off. For a small problem like this in a one-bedroom, should I just handle it myself or is it worth calling a professional, and what's a reasonable price to pay in Dubai for this?

For a small patch caused by a known leak, you can attempt DIY if you address the moisture source first. The AC leak must be repaired; otherwise, the mould will return regardless of cleaning. For the existing patch, a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be applied to kill surface mould. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning.

However, in Dubai's high humidity, mould can penetrate porous materials like drywall and insulation behind the surface. If the patch is larger than a square foot, has a musty odour, or you suspect hidden growth from the leak, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to assess the full extent of water damage, which is often not visible.

For a one-bedroom remediation of a contained area, expect a process that includes containment to prevent spore spread, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial application, and ensuring the wall cavity is dry. Reputable companies in Dubai should provide a detailed scope of work and post-remediation verification, often with lab testing, to confirm the mould is gone and the moisture issue is resolved. This verifiable result is what separates a proper remediation from a superficial cleaning that will fail.
