AC mold in Jumeirah villa: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, but I just pulled the corner back and found a big patch of black and green mold underneath. I live in a villa in Jumeirah and the humidity has been awful lately. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

That discovery warrants immediate action. The combination of persistent water from a leaking AC and Dubai's high ambient humidity creates the perfect environment for rapid mold growth, especially on porous materials like carpet and the underlying padding.

For a patch larger than roughly one square meter, or if the moisture has likely soaked into the wall or subfloor, a professional remediation company is strongly recommended. Disturbing it yourself risks aerosolizing a significant number of spores throughout your bedroom and home, which can trigger allergic reactions or respiratory issues. Professionals use containment barriers, HEPA air scrubbers, and specialized antimicrobial treatments to safely remove the moldy materials and spores from the air.

If you choose to address a very small area yourself, strict precautions are essential. Wear an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by sealing it off with plastic sheeting. The carpet and padding are likely unsalvageable and must be carefully removed and bagged for disposal. All underlying surfaces must be thoroughly dried and cleaned. The primary cause—the AC leak—must be repaired by a certified HVAC technician to prevent immediate recurrence. Given the climate, a follow-up air quality test to confirm spore counts have returned to normal is a prudent step for peace of mind.
