AC mold in Jumeirah Village Circle: DIY or hire pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a bit of water into the wall behind it, and now I’m seeing a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading there. It’s been getting worse over the last couple of weeks since the humidity really kicked in. I’m worried about my family breathing it in, but I have no idea what this entails cost-wise here. For a job like this, should I just handle it myself or is it worth hiring a professional mold remediation company?

The water leak is the immediate problem. In Dubai's high humidity, any moisture from an AC drain line or condensate pan will rapidly feed mold growth on drywall or behind tiles. That black patch is likely just the visible portion.

For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot), you can carefully clean it yourself with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, since the mold is stemming from an active leak inside the wall, DIY cleaning will only be temporary. The moisture source must be identified and fixed by an AC technician first, or the mold will return quickly.

For any mold caused by a leak that has penetrated building materials, professional assessment is strongly recommended. The wall cavity itself may be contaminated, requiring controlled removal to prevent spreading spores throughout your home. Reputable remediation companies here use containment barriers, HEPA filtration, and moisture meters to verify the structure is dry afterward. They can also provide post-remediation verification testing to confirm the air quality is safe, which is a critical step for family health.

The cost to remediate is driven by the extent of the hidden damage. It is worth getting an assessment to understand the full scope before deciding.
