AC mold in kid's room: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Park seems to be leaking a bit, and now I’ve found patches of black mold on the back of our 4-year-old’s wooden closet. He’s been sneezing more than usual the last couple of weeks, and I’m starting to worry. What’s the safest way to clean this up myself without risking my family’s health, or should I just call a professional company right away?

Stop using the AC in that room immediately and move your child to another space. The combination of a leak, visible mold on porous wood, and a child's respiratory symptoms means professional assessment is strongly advised.

Attempting to clean significant mold growth on a porous surface like wood often fails, as the roots (hyphae) penetrate deep into the material. In Dubai's high humidity, DIY cleaning with store-bought solutions frequently leads to rapid regrowth. For your family's health, the priority is identifying the source. The AC leak is likely creating a constant moisture source, and mold could also be growing within the AC unit or ducts, spreading spores throughout the room.

Professional remediation is the safest course here. A proper inspection includes moisture mapping to find all affected areas and air/o surface sampling to identify the mold type, which is critical when health symptoms are present. Reputable companies in Dubai should follow DM guidelines and use containment procedures to prevent cross-contamination. They can also assess and clean the AC system, which is a specialized task.

If you must clean a small area before a pro arrives, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Isolate the area, use a HEPA vacuum around the spot, and carefully wipe with a diluted detergent solution. Never use bleach, as it can release harmful fumes and doesn't kill the roots. This is only a temporary measure; the underlying moisture problem and the extent of growth in the closet and AC require professional equipment and methods to resolve safely.
