AC mold in my Dubai villa: DIY or professional help?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah villa seems to be leaking a little into the wall behind it, and now we’ve spotted a patch of black mold there that’s about the size of my hand. It’s been slowly getting bigger over the last couple of weeks since the humidity really kicked in. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

The black patch behind your AC is a common issue in Dubai, especially during humid periods where condensation from the unit constantly wets the wall. This isn't just a surface issue; the moisture has likely penetrated the drywall, providing a food source for the mold to grow internally.

While a bleach solution can remove the visible stain, it won't address the root cause—the ongoing moisture leak and the mold growing within the wall cavity. For a patch that size and growing, a professional assessment is strongly advised. They will first fix the AC drain line or insulation causing the leak, then properly contain and remove the affected building material to prevent spores from spreading. Surface cleaning alone often leads to the mold reappearing within weeks.

For minor surface mold on non-porous tiles, a DIY approach with appropriate protective gear can be sufficient. However, for porous materials like drywall in a villa, professional remediation is the recommended course of action to ensure it is resolved thoroughly and to verify the environment is returned to a healthy state through post-remediation testing.
