AC mold in son's room making him sick. Doctor first?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit for the last month, and now I've spotted black patches of mold around the vent in my youngest son's bedroom. He's been sneezing constantly and complaining of headaches, which he never used to get. Is this type of mold especially dangerous, and should I take him to a doctor or just get the AC deep cleaned first?

The black patches and his symptoms are directly linked. AC condensation leaks create the perfect damp environment for mold growth, which is common in Dubai's climate due to high humidity and year-round AC use. Most mold in these systems causes allergic reactions like sneezing and headaches, but persistent exposure isn't healthy for anyone, especially children.

You should take him to a doctor first to address his immediate symptoms and get a professional opinion. Concurrently, a simple deep clean is not sufficient. The leak must be repaired to stop the moisture source, otherwise the mold will return quickly. The visible growth is only a fraction of what's likely inside the unit and ducts.

For a situation with health symptoms already present, a professional inspection is advised to assess the full extent of contamination. Reputable companies use borescopes to inspect inside the AC unit and ducts. Remediation should follow Dubai Municipality guidelines, which involve containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment of the entire system, not just wiping the vent.

Once the system is remediated and the leak fixed, consider using a dehumidifier in his room to maintain humidity below 50%, as this helps prevent recurrence.
