AC mold in wardrobe: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah villa has been leaking a bit into the wardrobe in the master bedroom, and now I’m seeing black spots spreading on the back wall and on some of our shoes. It’s been getting worse over the last couple of weeks since the humidity really kicked in. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or a special spray, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company to handle it?

The black spots in your wardrobe are a common issue in Dubai, especially during humid periods when AC units work overtime and can cause condensation leaks. This creates the perfect damp environment for mold to grow on organic materials like wood, leather, and fabric.

For a small, surface-level area (less than one square meter), a thorough DIY cleaning can be effective. Use a dedicated mold removal spray or a solution of white vinegar and water, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the mold roots penetrating porous surfaces. Scrub the area, ensure it is completely dry, and fix the AC leak to prevent immediate recurrence.

However, given the description—spreading black spots, a leak source inside the wall/ceiling from the AC, and contamination on shoes—this is likely beyond a simple surface clean. The moisture has probably penetrated the wall, and the mold is established within the porous building materials. In this case, professional remediation is strongly advised. They will identify and repair the moisture source, contain the area to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home, and use industrial-grade equipment to remove the contaminated materials and properly disinfect the area. This is crucial in Dubai's climate, where hidden moisture leads to rapid regrowth. A professional assessment, often involving lab analysis to identify the mold type, is the most reliable way to ensure the problem is resolved for good.
