AC mold issue: DIY vinegar clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers has been making a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing these tiny black specks around one of the air vents in the living room. With the humidity lately, I’m worried it’s mold. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or do I need to call a professional AC cleaning service?

Based on the signs you're describing – the damp smell followed by visible black specks around the vent – this is a classic indicator of mold growth within your AC system, a very common issue here in JLT and across Dubai given our high humidity levels.

Using vinegar is not recommended for this scenario. Surface wiping might remove the visible specks at the vent, but it does absolutely nothing to address the primary colony growing inside the ductwork and on the cooling coils. The AC system will simply continue to blow spores throughout your apartment, potentially affecting air quality and health. Disturbing it without proper containment can also make the problem worse.

For any suspected mold in HVAC systems, a professional inspection is crucial. We use fiber-optic scopes to visually confirm the extent of growth inside the ducts and on the coil, which is not accessible to homeowners. Furthermore, Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for indoor air quality and remediation practices to ensure it's done safely and effectively, preventing cross-contamination.

I strongly recommend against a standard AC cleaning service. You need a certified mold assessment first to determine the contamination level. If confirmed, the remediation process involves containing the system, using HEPA vacuums, and applying EPA-approved biocides, not household products.

For a proper inspection and to get a clear picture of what you're dealing with, please call our specialists at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. It's better to be safe and ensure the problem is solved at its source.
