AC mold patch in Jumeirah, DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a little, and now we’ve discovered a patch of black mold, about the size of a dinner plate, on the back of the bedroom wardrobe. It’s been humid for the last month and the smell is really starting to get noticeable. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from ACE, or should I just call a professional company for mold remediation, and what’s the typical cost for a job this size?

A patch that size with a noticeable odour warrants professional assessment. Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer months, creates ideal conditions for mold growth, and a leaking AC unit is a continuous moisture source that must be fixed first. The visible patch is often just the surface; the colony can spread deeper into the building materials.
Using bleach from a hardware store is not recommended. It can remove surface discolouration but often fails to address the root problem within porous materials like wood or drywall. More critically, improper cleaning can disturb the colony, releasing a high concentration of spores into your indoor air. For a proper remediation, the leak must be repaired by your AC technician. The affected section of the wardrobe likely needs to be carefully removed and replaced. A professional service will use containment barriers and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination during the process, which is difficult to achieve DIY. They should also conduct post-remediation verification to confirm the spore count has returned to acceptable levels. Cost for a job of this scale is typically based on the area of contamination and the extent of containment required. You should request an on-site assessment from a company that can provide a clear scope of work and testing methodology, not just a superficial cleaning. |
