AC mold removal: DIY or pro, and average cost?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our AC in the bedroom of our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit, and now I’m seeing black spots along the bottom of the wall behind the bed. I only noticed it when I moved the furniture to clean last weekend. What’s the average cost to get this professionally treated for mold, and is it really necessary to hire someone or can I handle it myself with bleach?

The black spots behind your bed are almost certainly mold, and the AC leak is the direct cause. In Dubai's climate, this combination of moisture from the leak and constant high humidity creates an ideal breeding ground.
For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot), a careful DIY approach can work. Use a mixture of detergent and water, not bleach. Bleach only removes the surface color and does not kill the root structure of the mold; it can also release harmful fumes in an enclosed space and damage paint. However, if the mold has penetrated the drywall or if the affected area is larger than a square foot, professional remediation is strongly advised. The AC unit itself will also need to be inspected and cleaned to prevent immediate recurrence, as the internal drip pan and coils are likely contaminated. Cost for professional remediation isn't fixed; it depends entirely on the extent of the damage. A small, contained job is significantly less than a situation requiring wall removal and HVAC cleaning. The critical first step is a professional inspection to assess the full scope, including what's inside the wall cavity and the AC unit. They can then provide an accurate scope of work and associated cost. Getting an assessment from a company with a microbiology lab ensures the mold type is identified and the cleanup method is scientifically validated, not just cosmetic. |
