AC mold returned after vinegar; call professional or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little bit for a while, and now I’ve found a patch of black and green mold on the back wall behind my clothes. I wiped it with vinegar but it came back darker after just a few days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional?

Calling a professional is the recommended course of action. The mold's rapid return after a vinegar wipe indicates a deeper, active colony that a surface application cannot address. In Dubai's high humidity, the real issue is likely the moisture source—in this case, the AC leak—which must be repaired first.
Vinegar is a mild acid that can kill some surface mold but is ineffective against many species and their deeply embedded roots (hyphae). The discoloration coming back darker is a sign of sporulation, meaning the mold was stressed and released more spores. Attempting a stronger DIY cleaner risks dispersing these spores further into your living space and closet, potentially contaminating your clothes and worsening the problem. A professional inspection will identify the mold species to assess any health risks and, most critically, locate the full extent of the moisture intrusion and hidden growth behind the wall. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing contaminated materials like drywall or insulation, HEPA vacuuming, and applying specialized antimicrobial agents. Without fixing the leak and properly addressing the hidden moisture, the mold will continue to return. |
