AC mold smell: DIY clean or hire professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this weird damp smell for a couple of months now, and I finally pulled the filter out to find black spots all over the inside of the unit. I’ve tried wiping it down with vinegar, but the smell comes back within a day. Is this something I can handle myself with a proper cleaning spray from ACE, or should I just call a professional company for a full AC clean? If I hire someone, what’s a reasonable price I should expect for a one-bedroom apartment?

The damp smell and visible black spots indicate active mold growth inside your AC unit, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate where condensation constantly feeds it. Vinegar is a temporary fix that doesn't address the root cause or the spores deep within the system.

For a one-bedroom apartment, a proper DIY clean requires more than a spray. You need to safely access and thoroughly scrub the evaporator coils and drain pan with an EPA-approved disinfectant, not just the filter. This is a technical task; improper handling can damage the unit or aerosolize harmful spores throughout your home.

Given the persistent smell and visible growth, a professional assessment is recommended. The mold has likely colonized areas you cannot see or safely reach. Reputable companies use specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial coatings that provide a longer-lasting solution. When hiring, ensure the service includes a full internal system clean, not just a superficial spray, and ask if they provide any before-and-after documentation of the contamination removal. Always request a detailed quote based on the number of units and the level of contamination found.
