AC mold smell: DIY cleaning or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing out a faint, damp smell every time it kicks on. I finally pulled the filter out last weekend and found patches of black dust around the edges of the unit itself. I’ve tried wiping it down with vinegar, but the smell came back within a couple of days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a proper cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional AC cleaning service?

That damp smell and visible black dust indicate microbial growth inside the AC unit, a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and constant condensation. Vinegar is a mild disinfectant but often fails against established colonies inside the coil and drain pan.

For a unit showing visible growth, a professional cleaning is recommended. The internal evaporator coil and condensate drain pan are the primary sources of odor and require specific chemicals and pressure washing to properly address. DIY attempts often miss these critical areas, leading to rapid regrowth.

In Dubai, a proper AC disinfection service should include applying a biocidal cleaner approved by the Dubai Municipality, followed by a high-pressure rinse of the coil and a thorough cleaning of the drain pan to prevent immediate recurrence. The most reliable companies will provide before-and-after evidence of the cleaning, such as photos or data, rather than just a visual inspection.

Given the climate, consider having your AC serviced professionally at least once a year to manage microbial growth. If the smell persists after a standard cleaning, a surface swab test sent to a microbiology lab can identify the specific type of mold present and inform if more targeted remediation is needed.
