AC rattling noise and high bill: DIY fix or call technician?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making a loud rattling noise every time it kicks on for the past two weeks. My DEWA bill was also about 200 dirhams higher than usual last month. I'm pretty handy, but I don't know if this is just a simple filter clean I can do myself or if it's a bigger Freon or compressor issue that needs a professional. What’s the main difference between a problem I can fix myself and one that requires calling a technician for my AC unit?

Based on your description of a loud rattling noise upon startup and a significantly higher DEWA bill in Jumeirah Village Circle, you're right to be concerned. The two issues are almost certainly connected.

The core difference between a DIY job and a pro call often boils down to the refrigerant circuit and the electrical/mechanical compressor assembly. If the problem is external to the sealed system—like a clogged filter, a loose access panel vibrating, or debris on the outdoor fan blades—a handy person can often handle it. However, a persistent rattling on startup is a classic red flag for internal mechanical issues. This could be failing compressor mounts, a loose internal component, or even the compressor itself beginning to seize. A seized or struggling compressor will draw excessive current (explaining your high bill) and is a serious failure.

Under UAE regulations, handling refrigerant (Freon) is strictly licensed work. Any issue requiring a pressure check, leak detection, or recharge is illegal for an unlicensed individual to perform and requires a certified technician. Attempting a DIY fix on the sealed system violates DM regulations and can void your unit's warranty.

Given the symptoms—noise and increased power consumption—this is not a simple filter issue. I strongly recommend you stop running the unit and call for a professional inspection. Continuing to run it risks a complete compressor burnout, which is a far more expensive repair.
