AC smell causing headaches: DIY fix or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this weird damp smell every time it kicks on, and I've started getting headaches. I wiped down the vents but it came back within a day. Is this something I can fix myself with a good cleaner from ACE Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call a professional for a proper mold inspection?

That damp smell when your AC kicks on, combined with headaches, strongly suggests microbial growth inside the unit or ductwork, a common issue in Dubai's climate. The high humidity and constant condensation create an ideal environment for mold and bacteria. Wiping the vents only addresses surface dust; the contamination is deep within the system.

A DIY cleaner from ACE Hardware will likely be insufficient. These products cannot reach the evaporator coils and drainage pan—the primary sources of this problem. The smell returning so quickly confirms the growth is active and widespread. Continuing to run the unit disperses these spores and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) throughout your apartment, which is a probable cause of your headaches.

For health symptoms and persistent odors, a professional inspection is necessary. Technicians use borescopes to visually inspect internal components and may recommend air or surface sampling to identify the specific species. This is crucial, as some types common in AC systems can cause more significant irritation. In the UAE, remediation must follow strict DHA and DM guidelines to ensure it is done safely and effectively, preventing rapid regrowth.

Until a professional can assess it, switching the unit to fan-only mode can help stop spreading contaminants. A proper inspection will determine if a deep cleaning can resolve it or if the microbial contamination requires full remediation protocols.
