AC trips breaker every afternoon: what to check?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa's main living area keeps tripping the breaker every afternoon around 2 PM when it's working its hardest. It’s been happening for the last two weeks, and we have to constantly reset it, which is driving us crazy. I just had it serviced last month, so I’m frustrated it’s happening again. What could be causing this specific afternoon trip, and what should I ask the technician to check for this time to actually fix it for good?

Good afternoon. This is a classic and highly frustrating issue we see often in Dubai villas, especially during peak summer afternoons. The fact that it's tripping specifically at 2 PM is the critical clue – that's when the ambient temperature and solar heat gain are at their maximum, forcing the AC unit to draw its highest electrical load.

The recent servicing likely addressed basic maintenance like cleaning filters and coils, but it missed the underlying fault that only manifests under maximum stress. Here’s what you must insist the technician investigates this time:

1. Compressor Hard Start: The single-phase compressors common here can struggle to start under extreme load. A failing start capacitor or a weak start relay will cause a massive, brief current inrush that instantly trips the breaker. This should be their first check.

2. Undersized Wiring or Loose Connections: Over time, connections at the breaker, isolator switch, or on the compressor itself can corrode or loosen. This creates resistance, which generates intense heat under high current (2 PM operation). The heat increases resistance further, causing a thermal trip. This requires a proper electrical integrity test.

3. Breaker Itself: The breaker could be weak and fatigued. It might be rated correctly but fails to hold its amperage under sustained peak load. An electrician should perform a clamp meter test to measure the actual amp draw at peak operation and compare it to the breaker's rating.

Do not just let them "clean the unit" again. You need a certified technician to perform specific diagnostics: a capacitor test, a physical inspection of all electrical terminations for burning/looseness, and an amp-draw test under full load conditions.

For a persistent issue like this, a standard AC service won't cut it. You need a dedicated electrical and mechanical inspection. Our teams are certified to perform these precise diagnostics to find the root cause.
