AC vent has black speckles and damp smell. DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC vent in the master bedroom has been blowing out a really damp, earthy smell for the past couple of weeks, and now I can see black speckles around the edges. I wiped it with a bleach spray but it came back after a few days. Is this something I can fix myself with a proper cleaner, or do I need to call a professional AC servicing company to clean the entire unit?

That's a classic sign of condensation and microbial growth within your AC system, a very common issue in Dubai's climate. The high humidity and constant cooling create the perfect damp environment for mold and bacteria to thrive inside the ducts and on the cooling coil.

Wiping the visible vent with bleach is a temporary surface fix; the main colony is inside the unit. A DIY approach is unlikely to solve it because you cannot access the contaminated internal components, primarily the evaporator coil and drip pan. The smell and spores will keep returning.

For this situation, a professional AC deep cleaning service is the recommended course of action. They use specialized equipment to access, agitate, and extract biofilm from the entire internal system. The key is to verify they provide a proper service, not just a superficial spray. A reputable company should be able to explain their process for accessing and cleaning the coil and pan.

If the issue recurs quickly after a professional cleaning, or if household members experience persistent respiratory irritation, that would indicate a deeper moisture problem or a more resistant species, warranting an indoor air quality test to identify the specific contaminants.
