AC vent has black specks and damp smell. DIY or pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a faint damp smell, and now I've spotted these small black speckles around the vent in my bedroom. It’s been getting worse since the humidity really kicked in last month. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach spray, or do I need to call a professional company to check the ducts?

The black specks and damp smell are strong indicators of active mold growth, which is extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC operation. The AC unit's evaporator coil creates condensation, and if the drain line is slow or the unit isn't drying properly, it becomes a perfect breeding ground.
For a small, visible patch directly on the vent cover, you can carefully clean it yourself. Remove the vent cover, scrub it with a detergent solution (not just bleach, which only removes surface color and doesn't kill the root structure), and let it dry completely before reinstalling. However, the smell suggests the issue is inside the ductwork or on the coil itself, which you cannot access or properly clean. DIY efforts often just spread spores further. In this case, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They use specialized cameras to inspect the ducts and coil and employ containment and HEPA vacuuming to properly remediate the source. The goal is not just to clean what you see, but to identify and fix the moisture problem causing it, which is often a blocked condensate drain or an undersized unit. For verification, a reputable company can take air or swab samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type and that the remediation was successful. |
