AC wall mold: DIY clean or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing these small black spots forming on the wall near the vent. With the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. Is this something I can just wipe away with vinegar myself, or is it time to call in a professional cleaning company?

That black spotting is likely active mold growth, a common issue here when AC units leak and combine with Dubai's high humidity. Simply wiping it with vinegar is a temporary fix at best and won't address the root cause.
The leak itself is the primary issue, creating a constant moisture source that mold needs to thrive. Without fixing the leak and ensuring the wall cavity behind is completely dry, the mold will return quickly, often within days. For a small, surface-level area (less than one square foot), a thorough DIY clean with a microfiber cloth and a solution like white vinegar can be attempted. However, you must fix the AC leak first and ensure the wall is bone dry. Given that the leak has been ongoing for weeks, moisture has almost certainly penetrated the wallboard or insulation behind the visible spots. This hidden mold is the real concern, as it will continue to spread and release spores into your bedroom air. In this case, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters to check the wall's internal humidity, identify the exact leak source in the AC unit, and determine the extent of the contamination. For situations involving building materials and potential hidden growth, professional remediation following standards like the IICRC S520 is the most reliable way to ensure it's resolved. The consistent humidity and year-round AC use in the UAE means these problems can escalate rapidly if not handled correctly. |
