AC wall mold: professional cost and DIY fix possible?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my Jumeirah Village Circle apartment seems to be leaking into the wall behind it, and now there's a large black mold patch spreading on the wallpaper. I wiped it with bleach but it came back worse within days. What’s the realistic ballpark cost to get this professionally treated, and is it absolutely necessary to call someone or can I handle this myself?

The leaking AC and recurrent black mold indicate a serious moisture issue that bleach cannot resolve. In Dubai's high humidity, superficial cleaning often spreads spores deeper into porous materials like drywall and wallpaper backing. The leak must be fixed first; this is likely a blocked condensate drain line, a very common issue with ACs running year-round.

A professional assessment is strongly advised. The cost for remediation is determined by the extent of damage behind the wall, which you cannot see. Treatment involves isolating the area, safely removing contaminated porous materials, HEPA vacuuming, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobials to the wall cavity. The final cost is entirely dependent on the square footage of affected material and the labor for accessing it.

For a standard apartment, expect a multi-day process. Reputable companies provide a detailed scope of work and cost breakdown after an on-site inspection. DIY attempts in a case like this often lead to a much larger, more expensive problem as the mold colony continues to grow unseen. The priority is stopping the water source and then properly removing the contaminated materials to prevent health issues and structural damage.
