Air quality test or pediatrician first for child's cough?« Back to Previous Page

My 4-year-old has had a persistent cough and runny nose for almost two weeks now, which seems to get worse at night in his bedroom. I’ve cleaned the AC filters in our Jumeirah Park villa, but I’m worried it might be mold or something else in the air. Should I just take him to a pediatrician at Mediclinic, or is it worth paying for a professional to test the air quality in the house first to see if that's the real cause?

As a specialist in UAE indoor environmental quality, I can say this is a classic presentation we see, especially in older villas in Jumeirah Park. The combination of high humidity and AC systems creates a perfect storm for microbial growth that often evades a simple filter clean.

A pediatrician visit is absolutely warranted to rule out common childhood illnesses. However, if the symptoms are noticeably worse in the bedroom and persist beyond a typical virus (which is usually 7-10 days), an environmental trigger is highly probable. The AC evaporator coil and ductwork, which you cannot see or clean properly yourself, are prime locations for mold and bacterial biofilm accumulation. At night, the AC cycles on, potentially aerosolizing these contaminants directly into the breathing zone.

My professional recommendation is a dual approach: see the pediatrician concurrently with scheduling an IAQ inspection. We utilize tools like borescopes to inspect inside the ductwork and air sampling to identify specific spore types and concentrations. This is crucial because simply testing for "mold" isn't enough; we need to identify the species to understand the health implications. Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for ventilation and indoor air quality that we benchmark against.

Don't guess with your child's health. If the pediatrician rules out an infection, the indoor air is the next logical culprit. For a definitive diagnosis of your home's environment, it's best to get a professional assessment.
