Am I responsible for black mold in my rental shower?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been turning black for a couple of months now, and no matter how much I scrub, it keeps coming back. I’m in an older building in Bur Dubai and with the humidity lately, it’s gotten worse and started to spread to the ceiling. Since this is a rental, am I responsible for the cleaning and repainting, or is this something the building management or landlord needs to handle?

Black mold in shower grout is typically a tenant's responsibility for cleaning and maintenance, as it's considered surface-level upkeep. However, if the issue is due to a structural problem like a hidden leak in the plumbing, poor ventilation, or water seepage from another unit, the responsibility shifts to the landlord or building management.
Given its spread to the ceiling, this suggests a persistent humidity or ventilation issue common in older Bur Dubai buildings. The high humidity here, especially during summer, accelerates mold growth from condensation. First, document the issue with photos and formally notify your landlord in writing, as they are obligated to provide a habitable property. They may need to investigate for leaks or improve the bathroom's extractor fan. For cleaning, scrub with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach cleaner, but this only addresses surface growth. To prevent recurrence, run the exhaust fan during and for 30 minutes after showers and wipe down wet surfaces. If the mold returns quickly or covers a large area (over one square meter), a professional inspection is wise to identify the moisture source and assess if deeper remediation behind the tiles is needed. |
