Are AC symptoms from constant cooling?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment has been running non-stop since the heat wave hit last week, and ever since, my throat has felt really dry and scratchy. My kids have also been complaining of headaches, especially after they've been playing video games for hours in front of the cooled air. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this pattern. Could the constant air conditioning be causing these symptoms?

Absolutely, the symptoms you're experiencing can indeed be linked to constant air conditioning. In environments like Dubai and other parts of the UAE where extreme heat is common, using air conditioners (ACs) non-stop for extended periods can lead to a variety of health issues, particularly when it comes to indoor environmental quality.

Firstly, dryness in the throat and scratchiness are commonly reported symptoms among residents of buildings with over-cooled environments. This could be due to the AC removing moisture from the air at such an aggressive rate that the humidity levels drop significantly below comfort levels. Ideal relative humidity for a comfortable living environment is between 40% - 60%, whereas most AC systems aim for much lower humidity, often around 30%. Such low humidity can irritate the mucous membranes and lead to dryness in the throat.

Headaches experienced by your kids after extended periods of playing video games in front of cooled air could be exacerbated by several factors. Firstly, cool air is denser than warm air, which means it tends to settle at floor level while displacing warmer air towards the ceiling. This stratification can create temperature gradients that might not be comfortable for prolonged exposure, particularly when coupled with dry air from over-cooled settings.

It’s crucial to note that UAE regulations do stipulate certain standards for indoor environments, including maximum allowable temperatures and relative humidity levels. However, these are often set based on general guidelines rather than individual building specifics. Therefore, it's highly recommended you seek a professional inspection of your apartment's AC system and the overall environmental conditions.

For immediate relief and to ensure proper air quality, consider using a humidifier in conjunction with your AC system to maintain more comfortable humidity levels. Additionally, regularly servicing your AC can help optimize its performance and reduce unnecessary dryness or cold drafts that might be contributing to these issues.

If symptoms persist after making adjustments at home, don’t hesitate to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may recommend additional interventions such as humidifiers or air purifiers, which are widely available in the UAE market.

Remember, while you can take steps to mitigate these issues yourself, professional assistance might be necessary if problems continue. Call 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for more advice and to schedule a professional inspection of your AC system and indoor environment.
