Are black mold spots behind wardrobe dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I've found behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. We live in an older building in Bur Dubai and I only noticed it when I was rearranging the furniture a few days ago. With the humidity lately, it seems to have spread quickly. Is this dangerous and what's the fastest way to get rid of it safely with kids around?

Based on your description, the situation you've described is a significant health concern, especially with children present. The black spots behind the wardrobe are highly likely to be mold, and certain types, like Stachybotrys chartarum (commonly referred to as "black mold"), can produce mycotoxins. For children, whose respiratory systems are still developing, exposure can indeed trigger and exacerbate coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion, sore throats, and other allergic reactions.

The conditions in your Bur Dubai apartment are a classic catalyst for this problem. Older buildings can have less effective insulation, leading to thermal bridging and condensation on cooler surfaces, like exterior walls hidden behind large furniture. The recent high humidity, combined with year-round AC use creating temperature differentials, provides the perfect environment for mold to flourish rapidly.

Do not attempt to remove this yourself with bleach or other store-bought chemicals. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize the spores, potentially spreading them throughout your home and increasing your children's exposure. Improper cleaning can also leave microscopic roots (hyphae) intact, allowing regrowth.

The fastest and safest way to resolve this is to engage a professional mold inspection and remediation company. In the UAE, reputable firms like ours follow strict guidelines for assessment and removal. We would conduct a thorough inspection, including air quality and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration, then execute a controlled remediation process using HEPA filtration, antimicrobial agents, and techniques that prevent cross-contamination.

For the health of your family, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. Please contact our team for an immediate consultation at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com. We can provide a swift and definitive solution to make your children's bedroom safe again.
