Are black mold spots dangerous for young children?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I suspect it's because of the black spots I just found behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity lately. What are the specific health risks we should be most concerned about for young children?

Black mold spots can pose health risks for young children, who are more vulnerable due to their developing respiratory systems. The primary concerns are allergic reactions and respiratory irritation, which manifest as persistent coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion, and sore throats. In some cases, prolonged exposure can exacerbate asthma or lead to more frequent respiratory infections.
The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer months and in coastal areas like Jumeirah, creates ideal conditions for mold growth behind furniture, inside closets, and on cold walls where condensation forms. This is often worsened by the constant use of AC, which can create temperature differentials and hidden moisture pockets. For a confirmed diagnosis, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is recommended. The samples are analyzed in a microbiology lab to identify the specific mold species, as this determines the actual risk level and required remediation approach. This is a critical step, as not all black discoloration is the most hazardous type, and proper identification prevents unnecessary alarm or inadequate cleanup. Until a professional can assess, reduce the humidity in the room by running a dehumidifier or ensuring your AC is set to a consistently dry mode. Limit your children's access to the affected room and avoid disturbing the spots yourself, as this can release spores into the air. The remediation process itself must be controlled to prevent cross-contamination, which is why DIY cleaning is often insufficient for wall-permeating growth. |
