Are black spots on window mold causing cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect the black spots around the window frame in their bedroom are to blame. It’s been extra humid lately and I noticed the condensation there has been really bad. I’m worried but don’t know if this is something I can tackle with bleach spray or if I need to call a professional company to deal with it properly.

Those black spots are very likely mold, and the condensation and recent humidity are the perfect conditions for it to grow. In many cases, window frame mold can indeed cause or worsen respiratory irritation like coughing, especially in children who are more sensitive.

The dampness from condensation provides the moisture mold needs to thrive on the dust and organic material that settles on the frame. While often not the most toxic type, common household molds like Cladosporium or Aspergillus found on windows can still produce allergens that irritate airways.

For a small, surface-level area (less than a square foot), you can carefully clean it yourself. Avoid bleach, as it is mostly water and can worsen the problem by adding moisture; it also doesn't prevent regrowth. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner or a mixture of white vinegar and water. Scrub the area, dry it thoroughly, and increase ventilation to the room to reduce future condensation.

However, if the mold is extensive, keeps returning despite cleaning, or you are concerned about your children's health, a professional inspection is the right step. They can identify the exact species through lab analysis to assess the risk and locate any hidden moisture sources. In Dubai's climate, where we run AC year-round, the root cause is often a combination of high external humidity and significant temperature differences between indoor and outdoor environments, leading to persistent condensation. A professional assessment can determine if your AC unit's humidity control is functioning properly and provide a remediation plan to solve the problem at its source.
