Are my kids' moldy stuffed animals causing their cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I just pulled out some toys from the back of their bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa. I found a bunch of their stuffed animals covered in these black, fuzzy spots. I’m panicking because they sleep right next to this closet. How dangerous is this and what’s the first thing I should do to clean it properly without making the air worse?

It's very possible the mold on the stuffed animals is contributing to your children's cough, especially given their proximity while sleeping. Mold releases spores and microscopic particles that are respiratory irritants, which can cause coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy symptoms. The constant air conditioning use in Dubai homes can recirculate these particles, prolonging exposure.
The first step is to isolate the contaminated items. Place the moldy stuffed animals into a sealed plastic bag immediately to prevent further spore dispersal. Do not attempt to shake or vacuum them, as this will aerosolize the mold. For porous items like stuffed toys, proper cleaning that removes all spores is extremely difficult. In most cases, disposal is the safest option to eliminate the source. Next, inspect the closet and the surrounding bedroom walls for the moisture source. In Jumeirah villas, this is often due to condensation from an AC supply vent directly above or near the closet, or humidity trapped in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces. Wipe down all hard surfaces in the closet with a dilute vinegar solution. Increase air circulation in the room by running a fan and consider using a dehumidifier. Given that the mold growth was significant enough to be visible and your children are experiencing symptoms, a professional inspection is advisable. They can identify the exact species and the extent of the problem, which is crucial for determining the right remediation approach. Verifiable lab testing can confirm if the airborne spore count in the bedroom is elevated, providing peace of mind and a clear path to resolving the indoor air quality issue for your family. |
