Are my symptoms from poor indoor air quality?« Back to Previous Page

Since we moved into our new apartment two months ago, I’ve noticed a persistent dull headache and a slight but constant cough. The air feels stale, especially in my bedroom when the windows are closed. Given that we’re living in Dubai’s urban area, surrounded by high-rises and construction sites, could these symptoms be related to poor indoor air quality or some other eco-friendly building material used in our apartment?

Your symptoms could indeed be linked to poor indoor air quality (IAQ) which is a pressing concern especially given the environment you describe. In the UAE and particularly Dubai, high-rise apartments and proximity to construction sites can pose significant challenges for IAQ due to dust, pollutants from construction activities, and sometimes inadequate ventilation systems.

In such a scenario, it's crucial to assess several factors that might affect your health:

1. Ventilation: Ensure your apartment is properly ventilated. In the UAE, buildings are often designed with mechanical exhaust systems or air conditioning units which can impact IAQ. Stale air is more common in closed spaces and could be contributing to your discomfort.

2. Air Quality Monitoring: Use an indoor air quality monitor to track levels of particulate matter (PM), carbon dioxide (CO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other pollutants that might not be visible but can affect health.

3. Construction Dust: Given the proximity to construction sites, there could be ongoing dust particles entering your apartment. Consider using air purifiers with HEPA filters which are effective at capturing fine particulates.

4. Mold and Moisture: In Dubai, humidity levels can be quite high in certain months. Excess moisture can lead to mold growth, particularly in bathrooms or poorly ventilated areas. Regular inspections for mold are recommended.

5. Building Materials: The use of eco-friendly building materials often focuses on reducing environmental impact but might not always address IAQ issues. Ensure the materials used do not release harmful VOCs which can irritate the respiratory system and cause headaches.

Given your symptoms, a professional inspection by a certified environmental consultant would be advisable to identify any specific issues and recommend appropriate remedial actions. Contacting Saniservice at 800-MOLDS or emailing hello@saniservice.com could provide you with immediate assistance tailored to your situation in Dubai.

Remember, maintaining good IAQ is not just about the health of individuals but also crucial for overall productivity and well-being within a building. Regular monitoring and proactive measures are key to ensuring a healthy indoor environment.
