Are my symptoms from the dust storm?« Back to Previous Page

After the recent dust storm, I’ve been experiencing a persistent dry cough and a bit of shortness of breath every time I’m outside, especially after being out in the dusty air for more than an hour. It’s concerning because we've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this pattern. Could these symptoms be related to the dust storms, or should I see a doctor?

Hello there! Your symptoms could indeed be related to the recent dust storms. The persistent dry cough and shortness of breath you're experiencing might stem from exposure to fine particulate matter, such as dust and sand particles that are common during these storms. In Dubai and across the UAE, dust storms can occur frequently, particularly in spring and summer months when winds are strong.

Given your long-term residence here and only recently noticing these symptoms, it's important to consider whether there might be changes or new factors at play that could contribute to your health issues. For instance, a change in air quality due to construction activities or other environmental conditions around you can exacerbate respiratory problems.

In my experience dealing with similar cases, I often recommend conducting an indoor air quality assessment to identify potential sources of irritation or allergens. This would involve professional sampling and analysis of the air quality inside your premises, especially considering that dust storms might have introduced new particulates into your living environment.

Additionally, it's crucial to monitor the air quality outside during and after these storms. The Dubai Health Authority and other regional health organizations periodically issue advisories based on the levels of particulate matter in the atmosphere. Staying informed about such alerts can help you take necessary precautions when venturing out during or immediately following a dust storm.

If your symptoms persist despite taking precautionary measures, it might be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for further evaluation and guidance. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific health history and current condition.

Remember, maintaining good indoor air quality is key, especially in environments where outdoor conditions are less favorable. Consider using air purifiers that can filter out fine particles, and ensure your home is well-sealed to prevent dust entry. It's also beneficial to take regular breaks indoors during prolonged outdoor activities, particularly when the air quality is poor.
