Are my throat and stuffy nose signs of closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black speckles appearing in the corners of our bedroom closet. Ever since the heavy fog last week, my throat has been feeling scratchy and I'm waking up with a stuffy nose. I'm starting to worry that the two might be connected. What are the most common signs of mold that I should be looking for in a villa here?

Based on the symptoms and the description of black speckles, it is highly probable that the two are connected. In the UAE's humid climate, especially after heavy fog events which significantly elevate ambient moisture, mold growth in enclosed spaces like closets is extremely common.

The most common signs of mold you should look for include:

1. Visible Growth: The black speckles you see are a primary indicator. Mold can appear in various colors – black, green, white, or even orange splotches. Check for any fuzzy or slimy patches on walls, baseboards, clothing, shoes, or leather goods stored in the closet.

2. A Musty Odor: A persistent, earthy, damp smell is a classic sign of hidden mold, even if you can't see extensive growth yet.

3. Health Symptoms: As you're experiencing, a scratchy throat, persistent stuffy nose, sinus congestion, eye irritation, or worsening of allergy/asthma symptoms upon waking are very common reactions to mold spores in a sleeping environment.

Given that you are already experiencing physical symptoms, I strongly recommend against disturbing the area further, as this can aerosolize spores. The UAE's regulatory framework for indoor air quality is stringent, and proper identification of the mold type (e.g., allergenic or toxic black mold) is crucial for a safe remediation protocol.

For a definitive answer and to safeguard your health, a professional inspection is necessary. We use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air/surface sampling to identify the spore types and concentration levels, which guides the remediation process.
